Daylight Saving Time Questions & Answers
Common questions about time shifts, legislation, and history.
When does the time change in the United States?▼
In the US, Daylight Saving Time begins at 2:00 AM on the second Sunday of March (clocks "spring forward" 1 hour). It ends at 2:00 AM on the first Sunday of November (clocks "fall back" 1 hour).
Why does Arizona not change its clocks?▼
Most of Arizona opted out of the Uniform Time Act of 1968. Arizona summers are intensely hot, and having an extra hour of daylight in the evening would mean more air conditioning usage and higher electricity bills. However, the Navajo Nation in northeastern Arizona does observe DST because its territory extends into New Mexico and Utah.
What is the status of the Sunshine Protection Act?▼
The Sunshine Protection Act is proposed US federal legislation that would make Daylight Saving Time permanent year-round. While the US Senate passed the bill by unanimous consent in 2022, it has not been signed into law by Congress and the President. Currently, the traditional twice-a-year clock change remains federal law.
Do other countries change clocks on the same day as the United States?▼
No. While the US transitions on the 2nd Sunday of March and 1st Sunday of November, the European Union and the UK change clocks on the last Sunday of March and last Sunday of October. Countries in the Southern Hemisphere (like Australia and New Zealand) operate on reversed schedules because their summer occurs during northern winter.
